Jeanne Has Left the Building

September 27th, 2004

Well, it appears as if Jeanne has run it’s course through central Florida, and I must say that we here in Orlando got off well. Around 11pm Saturday night, the wind started whipping up pretty good, and since there was a curfew on the area, I decided to just go to bed early. Good thing I did.

By about 3 or 4AM, the wind was so loud outside I couldn’t sleep. I could hear the building across the way from mine being torn apart by the winds, and the rain was being driven into my window at a pretty high speed. Since I couldn’t sleep, I just watched the news and kind of came in and out as the morning went on. By 10AM, the worst of the storm was here - the rain was absolutely pouring, and because of the wind, it was coming vertically at us. All of our doors and windows were shaking, and parts of the buildings across the way from us were flying around. Absolutely nuts. By noon, most of the buildings in the complex were missing large parts of the roofing, all of the gutters, and tons of other debris were on the grass as well.

The positive thing is, in spite of all of this, we never lost our power for more than a minute. Our cable has stayed on as well, which means we have something to do during this insanely boring, yet tense time. Another good thing is neither of our cars were damaged - thank god.

The funny thing is, while the storm is essentially “gone”, the wind is still a steady 20-30mph outside, gusting up to 50 or so. The rain, on the other hand, has pretty much subsided. School has been cancelled for tomorrow, so I’ll take some photos of the damage when I get up.
