The Season of Giving

Wednesday, December 29th, 2004

Here’s a link to where you can Donate to the Red Cross for the Asian Earthquake. Santa hooked us all up, the least you can do is give 5 bucks… anything.

Anywho, I’ll update more after I get back to Orlando.

Update!

Wednesday, December 15th, 2004

Well, I suppose a lot has changed in the past week or so. If nothing else, it’s been eventful.

Firstly, my birthday came and went Monday (the 13th) with much fanfare (okay, the standard fanfare). 25 is a strange age to be, as it truly is one of those years where you feel torn - you’re still young, but you feel yourself being slowly pulled into the vortex that is the big 3-0. I suppose pressures, or maybe expectations is a better word, begin to mount now to “make something of myself” and to “grow up”. A lot of that may be self induced, but it’s real nonetheless. In spite of all of this, however, I am still not in a hurry to get the whole maturity thing going full steam. Maybe I can hold off for another 5-10 years.

Today is the last day of classes for this month, which means a couple of things. Firstly, sleep will once again be one of my friends for the next 2.5 weeks. Also, Christmas time is flying up - I’m yet to being shopping! I’ll be heading back to Atlanta this weekend, and plan on doing most, if not all, of it in a day. I hate shopping, but something about shopping during the holidays excites me. I suppose it’s the music and the atmosphere. Also, the older you get, the more …. excited … you get about getting a gift for someone, not just what you’re going to receive. This realization has nothing to do with my landmark birthday, however. I’ve felt this way for some time now.

I finished up my latest After Effects project last night (or this morning … whatever time you consider 5am), and while I think it looks pretty good, it is not up to snuff in my opinion. I’ll be working on it over the holidays and re-submitting it, but feel free to check it out (requires Quicktime for all you non-quicktime weirdos out there) and all of the work I’ve done in CG class over in my artwork section.

I’m frustrated I didn’t have more time to learn the ins and outs of After Effects, but this shortened month kind of screwed things up for myself and my entire class. Everyone was rather demoralized by the end, with myself especially being burnt out from the hectic schedule and lack of real instruction in the last week or so. Oh well, I did learn a ton, and plan on applying a lot of that to a few ideas I have in the very near future. Also, I’m sure we’ll get lots more work with AFX later on this year.

I could ramble on about other things that have been going on - the sudden cold snap down here (what the hell is that about? It was 40 degrees here last night!), my recent purchase of a Nintendo DS (which will consume my every waking moment for the next few months), but I’ll spare you. I’m going to prepare myself for my final tonight, and then the freedom that comes after it.

Camino Roadmap Posted

Thursday, December 9th, 2004

camino

Pinkerton has posted the .9 roadmap (and beyond). God, I can’t wait for the next release. No date was given, as this release is feature driven, not date driven. But, I’d say the next 6 or so months are going to be very exciting for Camino fans everywhere.

Some of the features planned are:

* Implement new tab interface (geoff, 80% complete)
* Overhaul preferences system (josh, just starting)
* Rewrite keychain implementation (josh, just starting)
* Implement form autofill (pinkerton, requirements gathering)
* Implement spell checking in forms (??)
* Further improvements to download manager (josh)
* Event system overhaul for better flash perf and reduced CPU (sfraser, patch ready)
* Better bookmark searching, including history (sfraser, just starting)
* Complete implementation of all major features.

On another note, I can’t wait for school to finish up so we can finish up the new Camino website. We’ve started to make headway with the tons of information we have to sort through to make an easy-to-navigate-yet-informative site. If you’re interested in helping with the Camino-Docs team, drop over to camino.wtmcgee.com and check out the Wiki we’ve set up.

Procrastination…

Wednesday, December 8th, 2004

procrastination

It’s funny how we will put off work we know about for a week or more, only doing the bare minimum until mere hours before it is done. It’s also funny how some people perform wonderfully in these circumstances (myself - I do my best work when a deadline is approaching), and others crack under the same pressure (there are a few kids in my class who fall into the latter category, crumbling at the last second and putting out piss-poor work). I talked to no less than 10 people online around 4 or 5am tonight working on last second projects, papers, etc. - so I’m not alone in my evil ways.

I’m not sure how my After Effects project will turn out. It’s due in a little less than 12 hours now. I’ve been up most of the night working on it, and I feel it’s a pretty solid clip, given how much time I’ve actually been using the software. When I’m done, I’ll post the work here for all to see. Until then, I have more work to do.

I’m slowly finding out that my future is going to include a lot of these all-night sessions. In a deadline-based ‘Industry’ such as digital media, there is going to be a lot of last second scrambling to get something just right. Red Bull has already become one of my closest allies, and I’m sure he won’t let me down in the future, either.

Vick Is a Pansy

Sunday, December 5th, 2004

vick

The Falcons got OWNED today. Vick threw 2 picks and fumbled the ball twice, on the way to a 27-0 shutout. This makes me happy because:

a) It improves Tampa’s slim playoff chance because of the win.
b) I hate Mike Vick
c) All of my fairweather ATL fan friends wills shut the hell up for a while.

Oh yea, the Bucs new kicker was 2 for 2, making a 50 yarder and a 30 yarder. Good times.
