What a Week!

Thursday, January 27th, 2005

This has been one of the longest weeks in recent memory. It’s funny - school has been kind of hectic, but nothing too crazy. But, the combined pressures of school, lack of sleep, and what seems to be a growing list of errands to take care of in my little free time has really worn me out. It’s been 3 or 4 days since I slept more than 6 hours, and I’ve gotten less than 3 for the 3 past nights.

Tonight, however, is the last night of this sleep depravation exercise - I have to be up kind of late tonight working on a presentation for my Entertainment Business class (I’ll post this video our group put together soon, it’s a rather funny spoof of Fahrenheit 9/11 and the show ‘24′), and I’ll be up early putting the final touches on a separate project also due in the same class. But after 5pm tomorrow, I have myself a glorious weekend of sleep, sleep and a little more sleep ahead of me.

I’ll hopefully have more free time this weekend to write something a bit more meaningful on my site - it’s been a while since I’ve written anything really interesting on here.

Until next time, kiddos!

Google, Webloggers Team Up to Fight Spam

Wednesday, January 19th, 2005

In an effort to curb comment spam, MSN, Yahoo, Google, etc have teamed up to deal with the way their page rank systems work. Now, all tags marked as rel=”nofollow” will not be counted, and therefore hopefully spammers will come up with new ways to pollute the web. Honestly, I’m skeptical and hopeful at the same time. Comment spam can be a real pain, and it clogs up the entire MT application. Let’s hope this is a step in the right direction.

I recommend everyone go here and download the plugin for Movable Type.

Apparently, it’s standards-compliant as well, which was my main concern.

Mac Mini - More Than Meets the Eye?

Mac Mini

As soon as I saw the Mac Mini this morning on Apple’s home page, a thought popped into my head:

“This thing looks like it’s meant not only as a entry level computer, but also could be used as a tivo-style computer for your living room”.

It’s got all the built in support that Mac OS has for HD, DVDs, music, photos, etc, and this article actually takes my thought to another level. All you really need is a composite video adapter and an IR reciever (both sold by apple on their webpage) and you have a ~ $500 entertainment center at your fingertips. I won’t be buying one for that purpose (too poor to be buying anything for $500), but you can tell Apple is trying to muscle their way into the “media center” arena of the living room - something they’re been neglecting for some time now.

[edit: 1/14 - Here is another article talking about an upcoming hardware item that could bridge the gap from Mac Mini to media center heaven.}

Combatting Comment Spam

Tuesday, January 11th, 2005

I’m sure if you own a Movable Type weblog, you know all about comment spam. I’ve installed some measures to keep it down to a few posts a week, but it’s still not a perfect science. The MT folks have posted a short document outlining ways to keep spammers in check. Again, if you own a Movable Type weblog, check it out.

I have MT-blacklist, MT-close2, and MT-DSBL installed and it seems to do a great job. One of these days I’m going to re-write this entire site and move to wordpress, though.

Talk About Childish…

Wednesday, January 5th, 2005

I’m all for our rights as Americans to be able to express our feelings about our elected officials. I understand some people are still bitter that Bush won again, and I’m not too happy with it either. But you know what? There are better ways than this middle school approach to protesting. The fine fellows at turnyourbackonbush.org have come up with a brilliant plan:

Basically, as Bush drives thru Washington D.C. towards his Inauguration, “thousands” (read: dozens) of people will “at a given signal” (which i’m sure is some sort of secret hand signal - I can’t wait to see what it is!) will all…. turn their backs on the president. Yep. They’re going to really lay it on the line, and turn around when he drives by.

Seriously, this country doesn’t have enough normal people in it anymore. Either you’re a gun toting, bible beating, terror-infatuated redneck Bush lover, or a left wing, reality distorting, protest-till you drop, hippie that can’t accept defeat no matter how many times it happens in a row. Rather than EITHER side working on fixing our nation’s problems, we just spend time taking cheap shots at each other, and complaining about the current administration’s shortcomings.
