My Top 5 Camino Bugs

Sunday, April 10th, 2005

I’ve been using Camino for quite some time. Even though it does have some minor shortcomings, it’s still the fastest and best looking browser for the Mac. I thought I’d share the (in my humble opinion) top 5 fixable bugs for the browser. A lot of people are clamoring for spell check, or form autofill, but those won’t be along till after 1.0 as far as I know. However, here are some easier to fix bugs that I hope can be fixed in the near future:

Tabbing between page and URL bar is broken.

Have Camino use Safari’s keychain implementation, instead of it’s own keychain entries.

Bookmarks divider does not remember state.

‘Zoom’ command actually fill full screen, rather than zooming to fit content size.

Improve tooltip display of TITLE attribute values.

There are a few rendering bugs and text field bugs that need to be hammered out before .9 can be unleashed on the world, but these are more ‘feature requests’ and not bugfixes per se. Additionally, any changes made to the gecko engine aren’t really Camino specific. Hopefully we can see these patched up before .9 comes out in the late spring/early summer. If you’re a Mac user and want to give Camino a try, I really recommend giving .8.3 a try.

Downfall

downfall

I’m really excited to see this film about the final days of the Nazi regime in Germany during WW2. Because it’s a foreign film, and Orlando is devoid of anything that doesn’t have the name Disney in it, I think I’ll be heading down to Tampa in the coming days to check this film out. Anyways, go to the site and give the trailer a gander. Looks like a spectacular World War 2 film.

VW announced the 2006 Passats in Germany recently. Hopefully I’ll be able to be the proud owner of one in the next few years.

Hybrid Cars

Saturday, April 2nd, 2005

This Article points out that a few ‘hybrid car tinkerers’ have modified their cars to get upwards of 180 miles per gallon in their cars. Basically, they have added the option to plug their cars in overnight (or whenever) to recharge the high-capacity batteries housed in their hybrid. This decreases further the need to use gasoline, and some of the people interviewed claim they only visit the gas station once a month or so.

Sounds amazing, right? Before we all run out to get hybrids, let’s get a few things straight. The supporters of this method should really state cost per mile, not miles per gallon. Here comes the math:

The article says that it can cost up to $3,000 to add these batteries to the car (which usually cost anywhere between 3-5k more than a ‘normal’ car in the same class, but we won’t factor that in). Let’s say you own a Prius, and you were getting 50mpg before you modded you car, and now you average 100. At $2 a gallon for gas, you would have to ’save’ 1,500 gallons of gasoline to break even on your investment, a whopping 150,000 miles. How many car owners drive their car for that long?

Additionally, the article does not take into consideration the cost of electricity to charge the car - and by the way the article is worded, the people who are interviewed charge their car daily, to save on the cost of gas. The author also does not take into consideration the cost of new batteries, and the cost of disposing of the current ones when they go bad.

I really want this country to focus on energy conservation and reduce our dependence on foreign oil - it’s essential to resolving the cyclical nature of our current foreign policy in the middle east. However, the marketing hype produced from hybrids makes me sick. All electricity does is shift the emission of pollutants from one source to another. Until we come up with something viable and clean, I’m afraid the stranglehold the oil industry has on the U.S. will not be going away any time soon.

Back in Orlando…

Friday, April 1st, 2005

Well, after a nice relaxing week in Atlanta, I made the trip back to FL last night around 9pm. It was really great to spend a lot of time catching up on my sleep, getting well (I had been really sick last week), and seeing some friends that I haven’t seen since the Christmas holidays. Most notably, it was good to get back to Dad’s garage, and go to Moe’s and Joe’s (and lose badly at trivia). I’m already looking forward to seeing everyone again in July. Funny thing is, that could possibly be the last time I’m there for a while, depending on where I find a job after school. Kind of sad, really. I’m still torn as to where I want to end up once I graduate from Full Sail and get my free job. Time will tell.

I really think 2 weeks would be the optimal duration for this break, as I’m just starting to get to the point where I can truly relax. Fortunately, it’s only Friday afternoon, so I still have the rest of the weekend to catch up on my video games and whatnot. On a completely unrelated note, I’m starting to feel awkward being the only single person amongst pretty much every person I know. I think I need to do something about that soon.
