March Notes and News
March 13th, 2006
It’s time for that monthly update of what’s going on in my little ol life. Work is going well, and that’s pretty rare for me. I always seem to find something wrong with where I work or how things are being done and start looking for a way out. But so far, that’s not the case here. I honestly think that it’s the fact that things change so much here. That can be a good thing and a bad thing, to be sure, but it seems to keep the job interesting.
I do wish I could spend more time doing design work vs. upkeep of current sites, but you can’t have everything you want.
Another thing you most likey don’t even notice is that I have switched content management systems. DanielAndrews.com is now running on wordpress, rather than movable type. I found constant rebuilding to be a hassle, and was going to actually switch to textpattern months ago, but decided to go with wordpress, as I’m fairly comfortable using it already. For you, this won’t really look or feel any different, but updating pages will be a lot easier for me, and the stress on a server having to rebuild thousands of pages will be minimized as well. I’ll be moving the There are some css issues i need to hammer out (mainly the comments) so bear with me while i make the switch. Also, I’m sure there will be broken links aplenty. Sorry in advance.
If you are subscribing to my RSS feed, the new URL is http://www.danielandrews.com/blog/feed/.
If anyone still comes to this page from wtmcgee.com, be advised that the domain expires soon and I may not be renewing it. Also expect a new layout in the coming month, if I can find the spare time for it.
Welcome! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Man, it seems like everybody is moving to WordPress. Aside from “already being familiar” with WordPress, why did you choose it over TextPattern? Presumably you were familiar with that as well.

Hey Ian -
I was familiar with both, but ultimately I found it easier to manage and a lot faster to implement versus textpattern.
I have set up textpattern for some clients who needed a basic CMS, but I always found some sort of kink making it a little tough to catch onto completely. Wordpress’ install is seamelss, and I’m fairly comfortable with the php template style that wordpress uses. I also love the preview feature in the wordpress compose window.
Honestly, both are great products, and movable type is as well. I just got sick of the rebuilding aspect of it, and updates in wordpress are immediate.
I really dig your site, by the way.

All this web mumbo jumbo means nothing to me… But, how did I now know about any Lady Situation?? Also, I have something for you, actually for your dad, and his collection.

Liz -how’s your site coming along? A liz-blog would be amazing.
Oh no! I bet this is gonna be awesome.
As far as the woman thing … I guess I’m just mysterious.

Daniel -
Thanks! :) I’m actually working on a redesign of it that’s coming along pretty well. I should be able to unveil it in a couple weeks. Obviously, I dig your site as well. (otherwise I wouldn’t be visiting it all the time. ;))
For AWG I’m going to stick with doing it by hand for now. But I’ve been looking into the various CMS software out there, which I plan on using for my other sites, once I get their content finished. Everything I’m reading, your post included, makes it sound like WordPress is the way to go.

Hi Daniel,
Stumbled onto your site while doing a google images search for an iMac on a desk for a project I’m working on. Very nice designs you’ve done. I’m impressed. Learned a little from your site already. I’m an self-taught web designer, learning as I go and doing mostly sites for small startup companies in my spare time. I also manage our website at my full-time job.

Awesome to see the change without noticing the CMS change!
It’s good to hear that you have a young lady to hang out with! If only I could change that for myself… Other than that, life here in FL is doing pretty well. Just trying to keep out of trouble (as if that’s hard to do - i rarely get out as it is).
Talk to you later, man.
